Luxury lodges, mobile homes and premium chalets: what sets them apart and how to choose
A luxury mobile home is a new factory-built home with more floor space, better insulation and a house-standard finish: single-unit lodges, twin-unit lodges, L-shaped chalets and double chalets. The Green Village Premium collection brings together the new lodges and chalets in the catalogue, each with its own page, photos and the delivered price for the destination you choose — transport and installation included, VAT shown separately where it applies.
Not every mobile home is the same. Between a holiday static caravan on a park and a lodge built to be lived in all year there are differences in size, structure, insulation and finish — and that is where the luxury end of the market sits: lodges, premium chalets and residential park homes, nearly always bought new.
This guide explains the formats, what sets a premium model apart, what changes when the home is your main residence, what drives the price and what to check before you buy. It is published by Green Village Mobile Homes, which sells new luxury lodges and chalets in its Premium collection.
What is a luxury mobile home?
There is no legal definition of a ‘luxury mobile home’. In the market, the term covers homes that move away from the classic holiday static caravan: more floor space, a structure and insulation designed for extended or year-round use, and a house-standard finish — a full kitchen, an en-suite, quality flooring and cladding, glazed doors onto the decking.
The names change from country to country: in the UK people talk about lodges and residential park homes, in the Netherlands and Belgium about chalets and dubbele chalets, in France about mobil-homes haut de gamme. At Green Village, the Premium collection brings together the new lodges and chalets in the catalogue, from 2-bedroom models to double chalets of more than 80 m².
Units available now
Single-unit lodge, twin unit, L-shaped chalet and double chalet
The format decides the floor space and the layout. The most common at the luxury end are:
The bigger the home, the more the plot matters: check the space available, the access for installation and what the park rules or the local planning authority allow.
- Single-unit lodge — a complete home built in the factory as one unit, with insulation and finishes above those of a holiday caravan.
- Twin unit — two factory-built halves joined on site, giving an open-plan living area and larger bedrooms. UK law calls it a ‘twin-unit caravan’: no more than two sections, assembled on site by means of bolts, clamps or other devices; in England, up to 20 m long, 6.8 m wide and 3.05 m in internal height (Caravan Sites Act 1968, section 13).
- L-shaped chalet — two wings at an angle, which create a sheltered terrace and separate the living area from the bedrooms.
- Double chalet — the Dutch ‘dubbel chalet’: two modules side by side, with the floor space of a small house.
For year-round living or for holidays
A holiday home and a home to live in are not built the same way. In the UK, BS 3632 is the British Standard for how residential park homes should be made to be used as permanent places of residence; first published in 1963, its 2023 edition improved the thermal performance of the external envelope and the control of moisture. If the home is to be your main residence, ask whether the model is built to a residential specification or is a holiday model.
The standard does not replace the permission: what can be installed on a plot or a park, and for what use, is decided by the local planning rules and, on a park, its site licence. The guide to buying a mobile home in the UK covers the British case and the guide to licensing in Europe compares other countries.
How much does a luxury mobile home cost?
The price rises with floor space, with the format — a twin unit costs more than a single unit —, with insulation and equipment, and with the brand. Always compare delivered prices: with transport and installation, and with VAT shown.
At Green Village, every lodge and chalet in the Premium collection shows its delivered price on its page, with transport and installation included and VAT shown separately where it applies; the current starting price is at the top of the collection. Pick your country under ‘Import to’, at the top right of the site, and every page then shows the price delivered to that destination.
How to choose a luxury mobile home
For holiday letting, the guide to mobile homes for holiday rental covers returns and the rules that apply.
- Decide the use — main residence, holiday home or holiday let — before choosing the model.
- Check the plot and the permission: what the planning authority or the park allows, the maximum size and the water, electricity and drainage connections.
- Choose the format by the layout you need: single unit, twin unit, L-shaped chalet or double chalet.
- Compare the specification: insulation, windows, heating and equipment.
- Ask for a written quote with the delivered price and what is included — decking, connections, furniture.

What is the difference between a lodge and a static caravan?
A lodge is a high-end mobile home: usually bigger, better insulated and finished like a house, often a twin unit. The classic holiday static caravan is narrower and designed for seasonal use.
What is a twin-unit lodge?
It is a home built in the factory in two halves that are joined on site. Can you live in a luxury mobile home all year?
It depends on the model and on the permission. For a main residence, choose a model built to a residential specification — in the UK, BS 3632 — and check with the planning authority or the park that the plot allows that use.
